Review: BEARS!

What's going on everyone? I know what you're probably thinking "TWO reviews in ONE day, How can we be so lucky!?!?" lol.

Well, the fact of the matter is, I couldn't wait to get this review up. I TRY to do at least 1 every couple days if not sooner when I have new game or item to review but this one has hit my top 10 favorites for "quick and easy family gaming"

I got in contact with Mr. Awesome himself over at Fireside Games and was able to get a copy of this great game called BEARS! to review.

Now, one thing to note is that I LOVE camping. I mean REALLY love camping. When we get a chance to go it's usually for about a week. So with that in mind, this game seemed like fun from the start!

If you frequent this blog you know that I like to insert a little bit of info/story/excerpt from the game I'm reviewing. If this is your first time checking out the blog, WELCOME and now you know as well! :P

"Bears! is a fast-playing, competitive game in which you score points by pairing dice.
Shoot bears and run from tents for a few points, or take a risk and score big by sleeping through the attack!

But watch out! If Bears are left at the end of the round, your sleeping campers are done for!"

With that in mind, lets get started on the review!

BEARS! is a game for 2 - 4 players and inside the box you'll find 40 Dice(Yes 40! Isn't that awesome!) and the rules booklet. You get 20 Player Dice and 20 Camp Dice(5 of each per player) and the insert for the box is nice because it has two separate areas for both kinds of dice. This isn't a HUGE problem for some but I like when things are organized so this was a great thing for me to find.

The way the game is run is a neat concept too. First, lets say we're playing a 4 player game. All 4 players take 5 Player Dice each(Black Dice) and then put 5 Camp Dice for each player in the center of the table. This is your "Camp".

At the beginning of a turn, one player rolls all the camp dice in the center of the table. Once this is done, players then take their handful of 5 player dice and roll them simultaneously and start grabbing dice from the camp!

The lovely models, my wife and daughter unknowingly caught in this pic

This is the frantic and fun part of the game. You have to take ONE camp die at a time and pair it with the correct player die.  If all the bears or tents are gone from the center, the last person to take it yells "BEARS!" and play stops. Now, be warned though! If you yell "BEARS!" and there were more of both in the center of the table you lose a point!

So it's a game that takes some VERY quick planning and good eyes to catch each die you need. For that alone I LOVE it. I got the chance to play a few rounds of it with my wife and daughter and we ALL had a blast.

It's easy to learn, fast to play and frantic as well which is a nice change up from some of the other games out there where you might normally take turns. This one lets you go all in and SEE who's faster at grouping the dice up.

Now, Play restarts and you keep track of scoring noting when you gain AND lose points. The first person to get to 100 points is the winner!

Now for my opinion:

Game art: Great as always from Fireside Games. Even the die faces are nice and bright while being able to clearly tell them apart if you have trouble spotting the correct colors. Since the game doesn't COUNT on the colors, this game is good for those who are colorblind as well.

Game quality: Great quality in the packaging, dice and rule book. The rule book is a little on the small side but still easily read. This is a plus in my eyes because it makes it more possible to travel with the game and not need the box as long as you have something to put the dice in.

Game playtime: Very quick, even with the 100 points. If that still seems to drag on for you, adjust the score to 50 or 75 or something like that and it should be just fine in cases where you don't have time for a full game. It plays just as fast with 2 players as it does with 3 so I'd imagine 4 players is no different as well.

So in closing I'd like to say that this is another GREAT family friendly, fun and fast game to play. Easy to learn and quick to play. Buy your copy today!
